Kornhill Apartments, The News Room

The apartments themselves are designed with the goal of maximising living areas, while conferring the warmth of a home away from home.

To this end, the site's developer, Hang Lung Properties, has achieved an admirable victory against Hong Kong's perennial space deficit, with apartment sizes ranging from 45 to 110 square metres.

Aside from the basics, all units include many of the amenities one would expect from a modern hotel, such as satellite TV, broadband internet access, and a 24-hour concierge. For an extra charge, residents are given access to the facilities of the nearby Grand Plaza Hotel. The complex is also close to various restaurants and coffee spots.

One such nearby restaurant-bar is The News Room, which opened in June, probably placating Taikoo Place's office regulars - mostly in the marketing and advertising spheres - after the departure of one of their haunts, Caf?Einstein. The new culinary addition has created quite a splash among the district's many creative talents.

The offerings, such as the Louisiana crab cakes and wild mushroom risotto, are refreshingly unpretentious and varied enough to avoid any specific culinary labels.

Indoors, the eatery is distinguished by its gleaming dark wood furnishings, while the outdoor seating area makes for a pleasant al fresco setting and is great for people watching.

The venue offers 16 varieties of wine, which can be ordered by the glass, thanks to its innovative system of keeping the contents of its opened bottles fresh. The playful cocktail menu includes 'Nixon Sour' and 'Pulitzer Punch', which take their cue from popular journalistic triumphs. Happy hour is at 4-8pm. Neeraj Soman
